Week 3 Story: A King and His Son's Journey

A King and His Son's Journey

The King of the kingdom was discussing with his beautiful Queen and his advisors about which one of his sons was going to be the next King to take his place. The king had always had a favorite son and his name was Jake. Jake was loved by all and he had the heart and the will to rule the kingdom in a proper way. After Jake had been decided amongst the advisors, the King sent one of them to go get Jake to come receive the good news, although Jake would not know what becoming a King would entail.

"Come with me Jake, we have great news for you" said the King's trusted advisor. Jake followed the advisor to the King's palace where his father and mother awaited his arrival.

When Jake arrived his father seemed sad, Jake asked "Father what is wrong, have I done something wrong?" "No my son, not at all" replied the King. The King began to clear his throat and explain to Jake that he would like him to be the next ruler of this great Kingdom but this was contingent on if Jake was to fulfill his father's request of going on a specific journey. The King explained that in order for Jake to become the next King he had to fulfill his requests, the journey required three long years of traveling all over the world to collect certain items from other kingdoms. The journey is hard, long and deadly but if Jake were to complete this, then he would undoubtedly become the next King.

All Jake ever wanted was to please his dad and become the next King, he immediately agreed to the journey and left to pack his bags and prepare to leave.

The word got around the kingdom that Jake had to leave to fulfill his duties to become the next ruler, people began to gather around the castle and form a line to escort Jake out of the Kingdom's gates. The people were a mix between excited and sad to see Jake leave but all were hopeful for the future.

The King and Queen wept as their favorite son left but there was a underlying glimmer of hope that Jake would return in a long three years ready to serve as the next great King.

Author's Note: I used the story "Rama is Banished" as my inspiration for this story. Although i kept the same setting, I changed the characters and the reasoning for the banishing. Also Jake is told to return after three years, where as Rama was banished for much longer than that. Jake also was on a mission to complete certain tasks that his father had requested in order for him to become the next King. I kept the King's emotions the same, in the fact that he was very sad to see his son leave.

  1. Hi Paige,

I enjoyed reading your story. It was very creative and well written. I like how you used the banishment of Rama as your inspiration. It was cool to see a similar story unfold with different characters. It was also interesting to see that tasks had to be conquered to become the next king. Overall, great job on this story!

  2. Hi, Paige! I liked how your story modernized the original story. I also like the fact that you shortened the length of Jake's journey. I feel like 14 years is a little excessive. I like that it was a journey and not a banishment. It felt more amiable than the actual story. I hated when Dasharatha read to banish his own son.

  3. Hi Paige, I really enjoyed how you made this story into your own. The Banishment of Rama is certainly different from your own story, but I think that was what made it an interesting read. It really felt like the beginning of a heroic epic so I think you nailed that. Hope you continue Jake's journey at some point; I'd like to see how that ends!

  4. Hi Paige,

I really like the story that you wrote, as I was readying the story I slowly started realizing where you based some what of your story on. I like the way you changed up your story compared to the original story of when Rama got banished. I see some similarities and some different with both the stories and that is great. Did you consider just sending Jake for a year, to make it more real, but it definitely is better than 14 years for sure. I wish I also saw more of what the queen felt when Jake was leaving, was she find with her son leaving for so long without knowing where he would sleep and live everyday? One suggestion I would have is to add feelings of different characters, so that readers are more in the story.
Hi, this is Jake. I wish I got to tell more of my personal feelings before I left for three years. I sure did feel a lot mixed feelings.

  5. Hey Paige, I really enjoyed this story. I have liked how in your story you keep the same theme of changing it to king's and queen's and giving it what seems like the European theme in which a lot of us were told stories of at a very young age which is still influencing our creativity even now. I loved how you changed it to a journey instead of a banishment which seems a lot more bearable for Jake than to be kicked out for 14 years

  6. Hi Paige!
I appreciated that Jake’s sort-of exile was only three years (much more reasonable than Rama’s fourteen!). While reading this story I found myself wondering about Jake’s competition for favorite child, and why he was chosen despite his lack of kingly knowledge. I hope his walkabout goes well, and that he finds himself fulfilled by his life and manages to make his parents proud as well. Thanks for sharing!

Feedback Thoughts

I think feedback is a great thing that can help one grow and learn from mistakes. Feedback offers outside opinions different than your own and often feedback helps you see another perspective. It is okay to not do everything perfect all of the time, if that were the case you would never learn and grow. If we never experience failure then it would be impossible for one to learn new things and and have a good mindset. Having a fixed mindset is not good and it can result in someone being stuck with the same intelligence, with little opportunity to learn more. Having a growth mindset sets you up to continue to learn, adapt and excel in the workplace. An environment with a growth mindset mentality is one that will have the most growth. It is important to change your mindset from fixed to growth. Self-doubt is another debilitating state that can leave one going backwards instead of growing and moving forward. It is important to not compare yourself to others, you are as smart as you let your...
